The 1916 Cornerstone

cornerstone2.gifAt the time of its organization in 1905, the East Dallas Presbyterian Church bought the building of the Washington Avenue Baptist Church, which stood at the corner of Gaston and Washington.  When that building burned in 1916, the congregation built a brand new building at the corner of Swiss and Carroll.  The congregation sold that building to another Dallas congregation and moved to its present site in 1950.  In 1975, the 1916 building burned and was subsequently demolished.  In the process, someone must have noticed the cornerstone of that building, still in tact, and set it aside.  There it lay for about 30 years -- until January 12, 2005, when Dr. Howard Moore discovered it on a trip back to that same corner, which is where his parents were living when he was born.  It was quickly moved here, and is now mounted permanently in the courtyard.
