The Columbarium

columbarium2.gifFor centuries, cemeteries were commonly located in churchyards. Today, many churches are providing this alternative once again by locating a columbarium on church property. The columbarium houses the cremated remains of members and their families.

The Northridge Columbarium, built in 2003, is located in the courtyard. It contains 54 niches. Each niche may hold two urns. At the time of inurnment, an engraved plaque containing the name of the deceased, date of birth, and date of death is placed on the niche.

The columbarium, which is self-funded, was built from funds generated by members who purchased niches in advance of need.

A committee, guided by a set of policies and guidelines approved by the Session, oversees the maintenance of the columbarium and the purchase of niches. They also assist the pastor with inurnment services.
